Some areas benefit, while others suffer. Although Hawaiian hurricanes only occur during El Nio
years, hurricanes actually decrease in the Atlantic. Fishing suffers during El Nio years in Peru but
improves off California. Drought and flooding are negative effects of El Nio years, but tornados
decrease in the central U.S. It reduces forest fires in Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico. It produces
better citrus and vegetable crops.



Answer to Question 2

The short answer to this question is that they are classified on the basis of wind velocity. A longer
answer is that there are 5 categories referred to by number, beginning with 1 being the weakest and 5
the strongest. This is referred to as the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale.
