Answer to Question 1

Dissolved calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) ions cause water to be hard. A water softener
exchanges sodium ions (Na) for Ca and Mg ions in the water using zeolite minerals. Water softeners
increase the sodium content of water. Sodium is known to be bad for persons with heart problems
(hypertension) so these people are on a low-sodium diet.

Answer to Question 2

Treated wastewater is pumped into the ground through injection wells. This helps to balance
freshwater outflow and seawater inflow.
