Answer to Question 1

Yes, continental volcanic arcs form in these areas, and they commonly are made up of composite
volcanoes (stratovolcanoes), such as the Central Highlands of Guatamala, the Andes in South America
or the Cascade Range in the northwestern United States. These arc volcanoes matter very much
because most people who live close to an active volcano do so at convergent plate boundaries

Answer to Question 2

No, the type of volcanic eruptive activity depends upon where the hot spot is located. The Hawaiian
hot spot, for example, is located in the middle of the Pacific plate within the Pacific Ocean basin and
typically produces shield volcanoes. The Yellowstone hot spot, on the other hand, lies within the
interior of the North American continent and has most recently produced large ash eruptions. Hot spots
are also thought to be responsible for flood basalts.
