Answer to Question 1

Dental pumice is refined and flavored volcanic pumice with a hardness just slightly less than tooth
enamel. Lava brand hand soap and some abrasive cleaners contain pumice. Volcanic rock is also used
to make lightweight bricks, cinder blocks, and many road-foundation and decorative stone products.
Volcanic cinders can be mixed with oil to form asphalt pavement. Pieces of rock pumice are sold in
drugstores, supermarkets, and hardware stores for use as a mild abrasive for removing skin calluses
and unsightly mineral deposits from sinks and toilets. Native Americans and Stone Age peoples in
many parts of the world used obsidian to make tools and arrowheads. Today, obsidian is used in
scalpels where a much finer blade than conventional steel is required.

Answer to Question 2
