Answer to Question 1

Soil conservation takes place with the individual landholder and with public policy. Examples of helping landholders include the TerrAfrica Alliance, the Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development Initiative (SARD), and the Keita Project. Examples of public policy intervention include subsidies like the SARE program, farm legislation like the FAIR Act of 1996, the 2002 Farm Security and Rural Investment Act, and the Farm Bill of 2012 . Other policies that may be cited include the WHIP, EQIP, and CSP.

Answer to Question 2

Human activities that result in erosion, salinization, acid rain, and water logging can cause a loss of soil microorganisms. In recent years, humans have begun to use nanoparticles (small beads of silver) in different products. Their purpose is as an antimicrobial agent. When nanoparticles reach the soil, they can kill natural and beneficial microorganisms that help to maintain soil health.
Soil microbes help plants germinate, obtain nutrients, and perform other activities. Therefore, when the soil biota are affected, the soil health is also affected.
