Answer to Question 1

One issue that students should address is how wastes should be handled, not just where they should (not) be placed. While a combustion facility or a landfill might be inappropriate for a particular location, it is necessary to process our wastes. There are additional impacts (e.g., air quality, noise, resource use from transportation) to be considered if wastes are to be transported away from an area because it is too sensitive for use as a disposal or recycling site.

Answer to Question 2

The office to call to have these questions answered is maintenance or physical plant. Typically there is an administrator who is in charge of the buildings and grounds. This office will have made the decisions about recycling, composting, and other solid waste handling.
