Answer to Question 1

Selective pressure is each factor (that) can affect which individuals survive and reproduce and which are eliminated. These are environmental resistance factors such as predators, parasites, drought, lack of food, and temperature extremes. Individuals that are able to survive (avoid or cope with selective pressures) are those that can reproduce.

Answer to Question 2

Spent fuel rods are placed in storage pools to decay in an environment that dissipates the continuing heat from the rods and prevents the escape of radiation. After a decade of such storage, more than 90 of the radioactivity is lost and dry storage is safer. Rods are then stored in dry casks awaiting transfer to their final burial in impervious rock. The final storage locations are frequently debated and thus much of our spent fuel is currently located in temporary storage casks.
