Answer: While Earth was still in a semimolten state, a Mars-sized impactor called Theia collided with Earth. Theia was shattered, and a material from what became the crust and the mantle was removed from Earth. The debris was scattered in a debris field around Earth. Over time, the debris accreted and formed the moon.
