Answer to Question 1

Answer: Slightly acidic water dissolves limestone by settling into cracks and joints in the rock. As more acidic water enters the system, the cracks are widened, and water can penetrate farther into the rock. Eventually, water and dissolved mineral content are discharged into a nearby stream. Over time, streams erode downward, so the water table drops and a cave develops farther down in the rock.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Geysers are similar to hot springs because both are pools of water that have been heated up by geothermal means. However, unlike geysers, hot springs do not have complicated plumbing systems that result in regular eruptions. Although some hot springs gush on occasion, they generally consist of free-flowing water that rises to the surface.
