Answer to Question 1

Answer: Weathering may be responsible for breaking up the geologic materials, but the landforms will not develop unless the weathered materials are removed via erosion or mass wasting.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Mudflows in general are defined as a rapid form of mass wasting involving a flow of soil and regolith containing a large amount of water. Generally, flows are distinguished from debris flows by particle size, since mudflows are generally fine-grained. However, mudflows in general do not necessarily have anything to do with volcanoes or volcanic materials. Lahars are mudflows generated by volcanic processes and/or composed of volcanic materials, such as ash.
