Mount Rushmore National Memorial was created at the height of the Great Depression in the 1930s by the use of explosives and jackhammers to sculpt granitic igneous rock.

Answer: The weathering was mechanical; - even though explosives were used, they did not change the chemical makeup of the rock. It was just broken into smaller pieces.

Answer: When a soil is young, the character of the parent material strongly influences the characteristics of the soil. However, over time, other soil-formation factors, particularly climate, are going to become dominant.
