Certain diamond companies use the advertising slogan Diamonds are forever. Why, from a geologic perspective, might this not be accurate?

Answer to Question 1

Answer: Because they form in environments of extreme pressure and temperature, diamonds are somewhat unstable at the surface and break down very slowly.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Si4+ + 4O22- = SiO44-
