Answer to Question 1

The answers will vary depending on location. Areas in Canada and the northern United States would have been covered with ice. The arid southwestern U.S. would not be a desert. Modern coastal towns would have been far from the ocean. Students should use information in maps and photos in sections 18.718.9 to justify their answers, or cite other sources that they located.

Answer to Question 2

Cooler climates produced different vegetation everywhere than what is seen today. River valleys were choked with outwash sediment and valleys filled with alluvium that remains visible as high terraces that formed when the streams incised their beds in later times. Fine silt was blown from the alluvial deposits and deposited as widespread loess to form fertile soils in the central United States. Cooler and wetter climate conditions in the southwestern U.S., compared to today, caused deep lakes to form within closed-in valleys.
