Answer to Question 1

An artesian well is a well or spring in which water rises above the elevation of the aquifer due to high pressure at the bottom of the well. These often occur in a confined aquifer recharged at high elevation. The water is flowing horizontally and when a well is drilled, rises up as a function of the elevation of the recharge area and the distance between the recharge area and the discharge point.

Answer to Question 2

Herbicides, chemical spills, sewage from septic systems, gasoline from leaking underground storage tanks. The greatest risk of pollution comes when wells begin to draw the water from the aquifer and transport the contaminated water towards the well. A solution is to drill to a deeper aquifer.
