Answer to Question 1

A natural drought and heavy loss of soil by wind erosion removed essential soils for farming.

The high temperatures and abundant rainfall in a tropical rainforest results in intense chemical weathering which leaches most of the nutrients from the soil, leaving behind a residue of iron and aluminum oxides and hydroxides. The most significant mineral deposits formed in this fashion contain the aluminum hydroxide mineral called bauxite.
