How do changes in glacier volume on land affect sea level?

A friend tells you that the crust and lithosphere under the Andes is thicker than the rest of the South American plate. Is your friend right that the plate is thicker under the mountains? Explain how you came to your answer.

Answer to Question 1

All sea level changes are not due to the growth of glaciers. There are times of past sea level change when there is no evidence of glaciers.

Answer to Question 2

Your friend is correct that the crust is thicker under the Andes than the rest of South America. Since the mountains are tall, they must have a thick root in order to float on the mantle above the rest of South America. This is the principal of isostasy.
