Compression: a stress caused by pushing together, the strain produced is called shortening or contraction. Tension: a stress caused by pulling apart, the strain produced is called elongation or extension. Shear: a stress caused by sliding rocks in different directions without overall shortening or elongation, the strain produced is also called shear.
