The crystallization of iron at the inner-core/outer-core boundary releases heat. Radioactive decay of elements within the mantle is responsible for the high temperatures in the core of Earth.

Answer to Question 2

The solar wind blew lightweight gas molecules out of the nebula except where they were already bound to the outer planets.
