Answer to Question 1

The seismogram indicates that the S-wave (the second wave on the seismogram) arrived about 5 minutes after the P-wave (the first wave on the seismogram). Using Figure 8.11, this is equivalent to approximately 4000 km away.

Answer to Question 2

Surface waves: move on Earth's surface causing it to roll up and down and/or move sideways. They cause the most destruction. They can move the ground surface as much as a meter or more.
Primary (P) waves: Body wave that moves through Earth below the surface. Displace material in the same direction that the wave is moving. Move rock a few millimeters or centimeters. P waves can pass through gases, liquids, and solids.
Secondary (S) waves: Body wave that moves through Earth below the surface. Twist material at right angles to the direction of wave motion. Move rock a few millimeters or centimeters. S waves can pass through solids only.
