Question 2

The potassium-argon dating method is applied to dating potassium feldspar in rocks. But it is important to keep in mind just exactly what the resulting numbers mean. For each example, indicate which geologic process or event is being dated:

A potassium-argon date of 2.3 million years on potassium feldspar in a volcanic rock
A potassium-argon date of 535 million years on potassium feldspar in a metamorphosed volcanic rock
A potassium-argon date of 164 million years on potassium feldspar in a clastic sedimentary rock
What will be an ideal response?

Answer to Question 1

A seismometer detects wave motion.

Answer to Question 2

A K-Ar date of 2.3 million years on potassium feldspar in a volcanic rock: The date reveals that a volcanic eruption occurred 2.3 million years ago to form this rock.
A K-Ar date of 535 million years on potassium feldspar in a metamorphosed volcanic rock: The date reveals that metamorphism occurred in this region 535 million years ago, and that volcanic activity occurred at some earlier time.
A K-Ar date of 164 million years on potassium feldspar in a clastic sedimentary rock: The date reveals that the sedimentary rock was deposited sometime no earlier than 164 million years ago and may have been deposited much later than 164 million years. The igneous or metamorphic rocks in the source area where the clastic sediment eroded from formed 164 million years ago.

Dogs have been used in studies to detect various cancers in human subjects. They have been trained to sniff breath samples from humans that were collected by having them breathe into special tubes. These people included 55 lung cancer patients, 31 breast cancer patients, and 83 cancer-free patients. The dogs detected 54 of the 55 lung cancer patients as having cancer, detected 28 of the 31 breast cancer patients, and gave only three false-positive results (detecting cancer in people who didn't have it).

The cure for trichomoniasis is easy as long as the patient does not drink alcoholic beverages for 24 hours. Just a single dose of medication is needed to rid the body of the disease. However, without proper precautions, an individual may contract the disease repeatedly. In fact, most people develop trichomoniasis again within three months of their last treatment.
