Limestone is made of inorganic and organic (skeletal) calcite. Chert is composed of inorganic and organic (skeletal) quartz. Dolostone is composed of calcite in which Mg2+ is substituted for Ca2+, often through interaction of groundwater with limestone. Evaporites such as halite and gypsum form in evaporative environments such as lagoon or desert lakes. Coal is formed from thick accumulations of organic matter that occurs in swamps.
