Burn patients tend to have increased potassium released into the extracellular fluid compartment. However, succinylcholine can exacerbate that problem by causing further release of intracellular potassium into the extracellular space. The induced hyperkalemia can cause cardiac dysrhythmias and cardiac arrest.
