The internal circuit of a ventilator allows the gas to go directly from its power source into the pa-tient. This is known as which of the following?

  a. Single-circuit
  b. Open loop
  c. Closed loop
  d. Double-circuit

Question 2

A 45-year-old woman arrives in the emergency department after ingesting an unknown quantity of pain medication and alcohol.

Her friend found her unconscious in her apartment. She is currently unresponsive to verbal stimu-li. Vital signs reveal: pulse 56 beats/min; respiratory rate 10 breaths/min and shallow; and BP 90/50 mm Hg. Her ABG on room air reveals: pH 7.21; PaCO2 64 mm Hg; PaO2 52 mm Hg, HCO3 24 mEq/L. The appropriate treatment for this patient includes which of the following?
  1. Naloxone hydrochloride (Narcan)
  2. Nasal cannula 4 L/min
  3. Nonrebreather mask
  4. Intubation and ventilatory support
  a. 2 only
  b. 4 only
  c. 1 and 3 only
  d. 1 and 4 only

Question 3

Answer to Question 1

ANS: A
There are two types of internal circuits, the single- and the double-circuit. The single-circuit al-lows the gas to flow from its power input source to the patient. The double-circuit utilizes a pri-mary power source to generate a gas flow that compresses a mechanism such as a bellows. The gas within the bellows will then flow to the patient. Open loop and closed loop refer to the ab-sence or presence, respectively, of a feedback loop system.

Answer to Question 2

Many thanks to you.

Answer to Question 3

ANS: C
The user interface or control panel contains certain knobs, dials, or keypads where the ventilator operator sets or enters certain information to establish how the pressure and pattern of gas flow are delivered by the machine. Inside the ventilator is the control logic or control system that in-terprets the operator settings and produces and regulates the desired output. The input power is the ventilator's power source that provides the energy to enable the ventilator to perform the work of ventilating the patient. The drive mechanism is a mechanical device that produces gas flow to the patient.
