Frequently the VD/VT ratio is increased in patients with congestive heart failure, pulmonary em-bolism, acute lung injury, or pulmonary hypertension and in patients undergoing mechanical ven-tilation.

In healthy persons who are sitting, the VD/VT ratio is 0.20 to 0.40.
