In VA support, the venous cannulas are placed in the same locations as with VV support with the arterial cannula inserted into the aorta or either femoral artery.

Unlike some of the optional parameters monitored during ECMO support, monitoring of antico-agulation parameters on a routine basis is essential. The activated clotting time (ACT) is most of-ten used as the primary test for anticoagulation at the bedside. The ACT is a low-cost point of care test that gives a quick assessment of anticoagulation.
