  b. 3 and 4 only
  c. 1, 2, and 3 only
  d. 1, 3, and 4 only

  4. When tidal volume in unstable due to leaks
  a. 1 and 2 only
  b. 3 and 4 only

Answer to Question 1

ANS: A
Volume-controlled continuous mandatory ventilation is indicated when a precise minute ventila-tion or blood gas parameter, such as PaCO2, is therapeutically essential to the care of patients with normal lung mechanics. Theoretically, volume control (with a constant inspiratory flow) re-sults in a more even distribution of ventilation (compared to pressure control) among lung units with different time constants where the units have equal resistances but unequal compliances (e.g., acute respiratory distress syndrome ARDS).

Answer to Question 2

ANS: B
Pressure-controlled continuous mandatory ventilation is indicated when adequate oxygenation has been difficult to achieve in other modes of ventilation. The instability of tidal volume caused by airway leaks can be minimized by using pressure-controlled ventilation rather than vol-ume-controlled ventilation.

Did you know?

Cucumber slices relieve headaches by tightening blood vessels, reducing blood flow to the area, and relieving pressure.

Did you know?

In 2012, nearly 24 milliion Americans, aged 12 and older, had abused an illicit drug, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).

Did you know?

As many as 28% of hospitalized patients requiring mechanical ventilators to help them breathe (for more than 48 hours) will develop ventilator-associated pneumonia. Current therapy involves intravenous antibiotics, but new antibiotics that can be inhaled (and more directly treat the infection) are being developed.

Did you know?

The tallest man ever known was Robert Wadlow, an American, who reached the height of 8 feet 11 inches. He died at age 26 years from an infection caused by the immense weight of his body (491 pounds) and the stress on his leg bones and muscles.

Did you know?

People with alcoholism are at a much greater risk of malnutrition than are other people and usually exhibit low levels of most vitamins (especially folic acid). This is because alcohol often takes the place of 50% of their daily intake of calories, with little nutritional value contained in it.
