The most common complication of emergency airway management is tissue trauma. The most se-rious complications are acute hypoxemia, hypercapnia, bradycardia, and cardiac arrest. Examples include intubation of patients when the oral route is unavailable, such as maxillofacial injuries or oral surgery.

A mixture of 0.25 phenylephrine and 3 lidocaine may be applied to the nasal mucosa with a long cotton tip swab to provide local anesthesia and vasoconstriction of the nasal passage.
