Clinicians can avoid most pre-analytical errors by ensuring that the sample is obtained anaerobi-cally, is properly anticoagulated (with immediate expulsion of air bubbles), and is analyzed with-in 15 min.

Small sample volumes or the need to apply syringe suction also may indicate that venous blood has been obtained.
