Soaps act by lowering surface tension and forming an emulsion with organic matter. Unfortu-nately, soaps have little bactericidal activity and work poorly in hard water. A detergent refers to a substance (usually a chemical agent but sometimes a physical one) applied to inanimate objects that destroys disease-causing pathogens but not spores.
