Unintelligent ventilators are called open-loop systems because they do not respond to changes in the delivery of gas to the patient when there are any problems.

A closed-loop ventilator system is an intelligent system that can respond to certain inputs based on programming. This type of system is similar to cruise control on a car. When a parameter is set on the ventilator, the ventilator compares the input with the output and makes certain adjust-ments. These systems are also called feedback or servo-controlled systems.
