A combined-pressure device, such as a high-frequency oscillator, produces oscillating gas pres-sure waveforms at the upper airway, producing a waveform that is sinusoidal, with posi-tive-pressure and negative-pressure oscillations produced at the upper airway.

An iron lung and a chest cuirass are both negative-pressure ventilators that are rarely used in the ventilation of patients these days.
