Answer to Question 1

ANS: D
The buffer base represents the sum of all the anion buffers in the blood, including bicarbonate, hemoglobin, inorganic phosphate, and negatively charged proteins.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: A
Increased CO2 causes acidosis, which decreases hemoglobin's affinity for oxygen. Acute alkalo-sis, methemoglobin, and hypothermia cause left shifts in the oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve.
