ANS: D
A blood pH that is greater than 7.40 is alkalotic. Therefore, a pH of 7.50 is alkalotic. A blood pH that is less than 7.40 is acidotic. Therefore, a pH of 7.30 is acidotic.

A pH electrode's second cell is the reference cell. This reference half-cell is composed of mercu-rymercurous chloride (Hg/Hg2Cl2), which is immersed in a solution of saturated potassium chloride (KCl). Mercurous chloride is also known as calomel.
