The proximal port of a pulmonary artery catheter rests in the right atrium and is used to obtain central venous pressure. Central venous pressure is used to estimate the right-ventricular end-diastolic pressure. The distal port is used to measure pulmonary artery pressure. The distal port is also used to measure the pulmonary artery wedge pressure, which is an estimation of left-ventricular end-diastolic pressure. The thermistor is used to measure cardiac output.

The normal range for systemic vascular resistance is 900 to 1500 dynes cm5. Preload is defined as the filling pressure of the ventricles at the end of ventricular diastole. Afterload represents the resistance the ventricles must overcome to eject blood. Therefore, an elevated systemic vascular resistance would cause an elevated left-ventricular afterload.
