You are assisting the nurse in caring for a new mother and baby in their home. You observe the mother has put the baby on her queen-size bed and used pillows to prevent the baby from falling. Answer to Question 1

Assure the baby is placed in a safe place and position. Discuss your observations with the nurse so the new mother can be taught infant safety. A baby should never be left alone while eating; the baby could choke or aspirate. Babies should not be placed on soft surfaces or have pillows, blankets, quilts, toys, or other soft items in the crib with them; soft surfaces and objects put the infant and baby at risk for suffocation.

Answer to Question 2

Do not leave the two alone. When the mother or another caregiver is available to stay with the patient, immediately notify the nurse or the physician of what was witnessed.
