Antiseizure medications are not to be given before ECT. These medications are withheld beginning approximately 6 PM the evening before ECT. The nurse should allow the client to sleep after ECT because most clients are tired after ECT and sleeping can help prevent after-ECT complaints, such as headache. The nurse should encourage the client to drink large amounts of fluids because clients often complain of a dry mouth after ECT.
