Teach the client to lie down when he or she feels a shock from the ICD. If the client is alone when this occurs, he or she should call 911 or the physician; if someone is with him or her, the client should lie down, and the other person should call the physician. If the person becomes unconscious, a family member or caregiver should call 911 . CPR should not begin unless four to seven shocks have been noted.
