Kussmaul's breathing often occurs if a person experiences acidosis. This type of breathing is fast, greater than 20 breaths/minute, labored, and deep. Cheyne-Stokes respiration occurs as heart failure is evident and is characterized by periods of absence of breathing and rapid breathing.
