Nonsalicylate analgesics, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol, Atasol), have the same analgesic and antipyretic properties as aspirin, but fewer side effects and are a good choice for mild to moderate pain in children. Salicylates or aspirin is not recommended for children because it is believed to contribute to the development of Reye's syndrome in children. Morphine and barbiturates are used for severe pain and would not be appropriate in this situation.
