IUGR can begin at any time during pregnancy and is linked to inadequate amounts of oxygen and nutrients necessary for fetal growth. Causes related to maternal conditions include diabetes (gestational or long-standing), placental growth or functioning, intrauterine infection, or pregnancy-induced hypertension.
