The McGill-Melzack Pain Questionnaire and numerical scale 0 to 10 would require the client to describe the nature and intensity of the pain to the nurse. The Wong-Baker Faces Pain Scale (a picture scale) can also be used for adults who have difficulty expressing themselves, or people who do not speak English. The client is asked to choose the face that best describes how he or she is feeling because of the hurt or pain being experienced. The FLACC scale is used for preverbal children, usually those younger than age 3.

The other complications occurring in a burn injury include infection, general gastrointestinal disturbances, skin ulcers, kidney failure, hypostatic pneumonia, and contractures.
