Answer to Question 1

T
As a teacher, the nurse will advocate for the patient by giving the information needed to make decisions. Advocacy means to promote an idea, belief, or person or to put someone in the best possible position to assist himself or herself. As a patient advocate, the nurse will use his or her teaching skills as a means to steer patients toward healthier lifestyles.

Answer to Question 2

D
Clear, precise communication skills are fundamental to teaching. Terminology that is well defined and understood by the patient is a major consideration. For example, an RN may explain about the patient's heart failure, talking about how sodium intake causes osmosis to occur in the kidneys, resulting in pulmonary edema. In this scenario, at least four or five terms would be dif-ficult for the patient to comprehend. When asked to comply with the dietary restrictions, the pa-tient may then be too confused to understand what is needed. The nurse must adjust his or her explanations such that the patient education is delivered clearly, accurately, and in understanda-ble terms.
