Answer to Question 1

Ans: A
Feedback:
The first step the new nurse should take is to practice leadership and management skills while providing excellent care for the clients. During this process, the new nurse should learn about the various nursing needs of the population and study about how to best provide nursing care for the clients. Completing the geriatric specialty is an excellent way to support expertise and competency with caring for the geriatric population, but the nurse needs to work a minimum of 6 months in the nursing home before applying to sit for the exam. Working with the charge nurse and helping to make the team assignments or asking for a charge nurse to mentor are later steps in the process of reaching the goal to become a first-level manager.

Answer to Question 2

Ans: D
Feedback:
Excellent clinical skills through job experience help a manager understand the work from a worker's perspective. A college degree in management would exceed the requirement of a first-level management position. Attending seminars is good but not as good as clinical experience. The certification may or may not be in the specialty area in which the manager will work.
