When the nurse cares for him- or herself adequately, he or she will have the personal resources to practice caregiving with empathy and compassion. Inappropriate jokes do not demonstrate adequate stress reduction methods. Skipping breaks does not allow the nurse to care for him- or herself. Understanding that asking for a different assignment may be necessary is important, but this is not the best option.

The use of ethics is not related to intelligence but rather gives nurses a framework in which to analysis situations.
A requirement of a profession is a code of ethics to guide behavior. The goal is not to dictate to nurses what to do in every situation but to provide guidance for decision making an action in difficult situations.
