Toxic mentors are people who are destructive or toxic to the novice nurse. Dumpers throw people into a new role or position and let them fail. Avoiders are nonresponsive people who are unavailable or inaccessible. Blockers may refuse to help, withhold information needed to succeed, or stifle the development of the individual by hovering too closely.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: 3
Destroyers tear down the individual by tearing down the nurse's self-confidence. This preceptor is acting as a destroyer, perhaps because she is threatened by the new nurse's knowledge.
