Answer to Question 1

mediolateral

Rationale: The lateral position of the calcaneus requires the leg and foot to be rolled laterally so the 5th digit is in contact with the image receptor. The foot should be dorsiflexed to create a near 90 degree angle between the top of the foot and the lower leg. This lateral position will create a profile view of the calcaneus. Considering the position of the leg and foot, the projection of the beam will pass through the part medial to lateral.

Answer to Question 2

20 degrees

Rationale: The mediolateral knee requires a 20 degree flexion when positioning to prevent the patellofemoral joint from closing.
