Answer to Question 1

tangential

Rationale: The tangential or skimming beam will best image the sesamoids in profile and free of superimposition. The foot is dorsiflexed and a perpendicular beam is aligned to skim the posterior aspect of the metatarsophalangeal joint.

Answer to Question 2

2nd metacarpophalangeal joint

Rationale: The lateral hand will rotate the thumb side up in position creating a lateromedial projection. The metacarpals should be superimposed and are of primary interest. The fingers should be separated. The central ray is directed to the 2nd metacarpophalangeal joint (MCP) and collimation is to include the entire hand and 1 inch of the distal radius and ulna.
