Answer to Question 1

They might find faith to be central to any religion, though the professor can challenge this assumption by asking of a religion might stress action more than belief, or if a religion can stress rationality, personal experience, or proofs more than belief. It is possible that faith implies trust, more than simply belief. The faith of Abraham as he went to offer Isaac as sacrifice is explored wonderfully in Sren Kierkegaard's Fear and Trembling. The professor might also suggest that when Buddhists take refuge in the Buddha, this, too, is an example of faith as trust.

Answer to Question 2

Perhaps hints of the Design Argument (the theological argument that defends the existence of God based upon the beauty and order of nature) are at work in some students' minds. It seems likely that students will think a religion ought to work as well for a person in the city, but how they express this might be difficult. Answers to the last part of the question might be a simple Yes; the professor can offer further examples (in lofty mountains, in a slum, in a war zone, in a temple) to give the question content.
