Confucius stressed that the king need not rule with force. Indeed, a good king will rule by example and be followed naturally, so that society forms harmoniously around the virtuous leader. The monastery, by contrast, seems to be evidence of religious life that tries to get away from society. Students might find this to be too escapist, or perhaps they would find it more conducive to spirituality. Notably, even desert monasteries would often become famous places and would attract pilgrims.
