In a blepharoplasty, redundant skinfolds and herniated pockets of fat are removed and defects in the muscle layer are repaired. The baggy lids can obstruct vision in extreme cases. Blepharoplasty is commonly performed by plastic surgeons.

In extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE), the lens is delivered through a small incision in the region of the limbus, the anterior capsule is incised with a cystotome or capsulorhexis forceps, and the nucleus is aspirated by phacoemulsification or delivered by manual expression.
